The Faculty of the Built Environment is currently running an interdisciplinary elective course in which students are generating concepts for a school and associated residential accommodation for Ugandan children orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. The course is offered under FBEOutThere!, a unit that consolidates the faculty's community engagement activities. A great challenge is that the students will not be visiting the site. Their knowledge of the place, the people, the situation, the constraints and opportunities must be learned through the insights of others. These resource people are part of the "community of practice" throughout the session. As part of this process, Prof. Daniel Tarantola of the IHHR has been providing a comprehensive introduction to the social, political and environmental issues surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. March 2007:The University of New South Wales' Initiative for Health and Human Rights (IHHR) will be hosting Australia's first intensive short course on Health, Development and Human Rights from 16-20 July 2007. The course is created and taught by the multi-faculty IHHR, which derives its members from the Faculties of Medicine, Arts and Social Sciences and Law and includes pre-eminent international speakers. The course will establish the key concepts and frameworks of the three domains of health, development and human rights, before exploring the reciprocal links between the three fields. The final sessions of the course will explore the applications of these concepts and methods to particular areas of relevance to the participants. Both UNSW students and professional participants are welcomed to apply and enrol in the course.
